When we arrived in Thunder Bay, hot, tired, and a little cranky, we were greeted by the resident 12-year-old pooch, Toby. Toby is a gentle soul who is happy to wag her tail at guests and stop by for a few pats.

Wendy is the owner of the Old Country Motel. She has a very open pet-friendly policy -- evident in that one of her guests, staying for several weeks, was there with a Great Dane/Shepherd cross! Many accommodations have restrictions on the size of pet permitted; not so at the Old Country Motel.

Wendy mentioned that there were a couple of weeks over the year that every guest had a dog or two. While we were there, we saw several dogs -- and even met a couple of friendly pet owners, eager to show off their adorable new pup.

The motel room itself was well-maintained, affordable, clean & comfortable. There are nice touches around the room that show that Wendy really does care about the place: flowers, potpourri, framed photos, napkins...

Amenities/services include: laundry room and phone (no phone in room); coffee maker; kettle & teapot; complimentary coffee and tea; stovetop and sink; writing desk; cable TV; mini-fridge; table and chairs; pots, pans, dishes, cutlery, and toaster.

In the area there are plenty of places to walk the dog. Just up the street is Boulevard Lake, which offers 650 acres of parkland. Trowbridge Falls is also just a few minutes drive away. Marina Park is a few blocks away in the other direction; dogs can be walked there, on-leash, around the water. If you have a chance, Kakabeka Falls is well worth a visit, located approximately 30 minutes from Thunder Bay.

To get back on the TransCanada Hwy from the Old Country Motel takes just a few minutes. The motel is located several blocks from the highway so that you don't get all of the noise.

The Old Country Motel has a wonderfully welcoming pet-friendly attitude. Stop on by and say hello to Wendy for us ... and give Toby a pat!
